A Dalmatia native was recently named the United States Coast Guard Rookie Recruiter of the Year for 2012.
Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class Melissa Leake, a public affairs specialist, competed against more than 100 recruiters for the award that recognizes the efforts of the most outstanding first-year recruiter.
In addition to the recruiting award, Leake also received a Commandant’s Letter of Commendation to recognize her exemplary performance.
In the citation, Leake was cited for outstanding performance of duty while serving as a production recruiter at Recruiting office Hampton Roads, Va., from October 2011 through September 2012. She exceeded all quotas and recruited 23 active duty Coast Guardsmen and eight Coast Guard Reservists while contributing to the Coast Guard’s diversity program by enlisting an impressive 39 percent women and 26 percent underrepresented minorities.
Leake is a 2000 graduate of Line Mountain High School and has a husband, Matthew and two daughters, Jayde and Mya. She enlisted in the Coast Guard in 2006.
