Penns Creek Ecology Day

— NEW BERLIN — A Penns Creek Ecology Day sponsored by the Lower Penns Creek Watershed Association will be held Aug. 9 from 9 a.m. to noon and a second session from 1 to 4 p.m. at the New Berlin Commons pavilion on the creek. From noon to 1 p.m. a light lunch will be provided for participants staying from the morning group, and those from the afternoon group are encouraged to come early for lunch.

Biologists and water quality specialists from the Snyder and Union County Conservation Districts and Susquehanna University staff will guide the participants through stream study components of water quality, macroinvertebrate community (bugs, crayfish, clams), and fish community. This will be a “hands on” approach where the opportunity to collect and handle bugs, fish, and other critters will be offered to all those interested in a small group setting. All equipment (nets, buckets, etc.) will be available and microscopes will be on site to look at the animals and plants collected. All animals and plants will be released back into the creek.

Bring boots or shorts and sneakers and plan to get wet and muddy. All interested persons of any age are welcome, though children are required to have an adult present. Raindate for the event will be Aug. 16. Contact Jason Winey at the Snyder County Conservation District in Middleburg, at (570) 837-3000 ext. 112 if you plan to attend since space will be limited.
