Photographs in BU gallery exhibit document Centralia’s abandoned landscape

— BLOOMSBURG — Centralia, an area virtually uninhabited for decades, will be put on display by photographer Garrett Hansen in Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Haas Gallery. The photography series will be featured from Oct. 23 until Nov. 22, with a reception for the artist from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 7, fincluding an artist lecture at 1 p.m.

While the coal fire that began in 1962 in Centralia burns still, the surrounding borough has been all but abandoned. In the “Centralia Series,” Hansen documents the transformation of the landscape through natural growth and regeneration. It also reveals the effect humans have had on the landscape through negligence and indifference.

Hansen earned a masters of fine arts in photography from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. He has taught in Maine, Indiana and Pennsylvania and abroad in China, Cambodia and Indonesia. His work is featured in private collections in the Kinsey Institute, the Cleveland Museum of Art and in Japan.

For more information, contact gallery associate Scott Roper at sroper@bloomu.edu. The Haas Gallery of Art is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from noon until 2 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sundays and university holidays. The exhibit is open to the public and free of charge.
