And Another Oktoberfest Goes Into the Books!

— MIFFLINBURG — Mifflinburg’s ninth annual Oktoberfest has folded its tents, poured the last stein of beer, hunt up their lederhosen and polkaed away until next year when it celebrates its 10th anniversary. The event enjoyed spectacular weather with sunshine, some clouds and temperatures in the 80s.

Records were once again broken this year for attendance. While an accurate accounting of numbers is difficult since those who do not purchase beer or wine do not have to buy a wristband, the number of kegs of beer poured increased from 66 kegs last year to 74 kegs this year. Music (and the requisite singing-along by the crowds) filled the tents throughout the events provided by the One Man German Band, Music Werke and the big show with John Stevens’ Doubleshot polka band on Friday evening. In addition to audience participation dancing of all ages, traditional dancing was provided by the Pleasant Valley Dancers and the Black Run Bohemian Dancers. Hay rides were extremely popular this year quite possibly due to the extremely lovely weather.

Once again the ever popular Keg Toss and Mug Lift events were held on Saturday afternoon. In the Keg Toss there are men’s and women’s divisions and two different sized kegs to toss based upon gender. The winner in the men’s division this year was Dave Walls and the women’s division winner was Stephanie Jennings. Second places went to Chest Rockwell and Talia Zangri. For the Mug Lift there is no distinction between men and women for the required lifts. Both must hold two one liter steins of beer in each hand for as long as possible. The men’s winners were Dave Walls in first place and Tim Thompson taking second place. For the ladies, Stephanie Jennings took home another first place win with Abby Saul coming in second.

Many thanks to all of the volunteers who made this event possible including set up, clean up, bartending, working the office, the souvenir booth and the wine and pretzel booth.
