— BLOOMSBURG — Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania is again listed as one of the best universities in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report’s annual ranking of U.S. colleges and universities.

In data released this week, U.S. News lists BU as number 95 of the Best Regional Universities for the northern region, tied with Eastern University and the University of St. Joseph. Bloomsburg is fifth among institutions in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). Last year, U.S. News rated BU at 104.

Best Regional Universities ranks institutions that offer a full range of undergraduate degrees and some master’s programs but few, if any, doctoral degrees. The 621 universities in the category are ranked against their peer group in one of four geographic regions – north, south, midwest and west.

BU’s 80 percent retention rate (percentage of freshmen who return to school) is higher than the retention rate at several colleges that earned higher overall ratings, including King’s College and Shippensburg, Monmouth, Roger Williams and Farleigh Dickinson universities. It matches several institutions that earned higher overall ratings, such as Wagner College and Rider, Gannon and Wilkes universities.

At 64 percent, Bloomsburg’s graduation rate exceeds those of higher ranked Slippery Rock and Shippensburg universities and ties Millersville. And, with a 9 percent alumni giving rate, Bloomsburg has more participation than higher ranked public universities, including West Chester, Millersville, Rowan, Towson and Montclair State.
