BU’s Empty Bowls helps fill empty stomachs

— BLOOMSBURG — Empty Bowls, an international hunger awareness and fundraising event, returns to Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania to benefit the Bloomsburg Food Cupboard.

The 12th annual Empty Bowls event will be held on March 30, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Kehr Union Ballroom. A minimum donation of $10 for adults and $5 for students is requested for unlimited soups. Children under 5-years-old eat free.

Dozens of area restaurants, chefs and community groups will donate soups and breads, which will be served by hundreds of volunteers consisting of BU students, faculty, staff and community members. Activities for children will be available. Event participants can purchase keepsake bowls decorated by local artists for an additional $10. Baked dessert items and raffle items will also be available for purchase.

In Columbia County, 13.2 percent of residents are termed “food insecure,” according to feedamerica.org, meaning they lack consistent access to adequate food. The Bloomsburg Food Cupboard reaches out to feed hundreds of families in the area.

BU’s Empty Bowls event was established in 2003 by the SOLVE volunteer office and the Bloomsburg Food Cupboard. For more information on this year’s event, contact Jean Downing, SOLVE director at BU, jdowning@bloomu.edu or call (570) 389-4798.
