ELYSBURG — As part of its ongoing commitment to being a better neighbor in all of the communities it serves, Giant Food Stores will donate a new electronic baseball scoreboard to Ralpho Township Community Park in Elysburg. On Sept. 1, the Little League Field will be dedicated as “Glenn Herring Memorial Field” in memory of the late Coach Glenn Herring, founder of the town’s Little League and teener league baseball teams. The new scoreboard bears Coach Herring’s name.
Former players and family of Coach Herring including his son, Giant President Rick Herring, will be on hand for the dedication.
“My dad, along with constant support from my mom, helped to bring baseball alive for the young men in Elysburg and throughout the township. In the 1950s, he started a town team for men,” said Herring. “As my brothers came of age in the 1960s, dad formed the town’s Little League team and teener team. This memorial honors my dad and all those who helped him start baseball in Elysburg, plus all those who coach our kids today.” Coach Herring was active in baseball in the Elysburg area for more than 30 years. He played and managed Elysburg’s adult amateur team in the late 1950s. Coach Herring started a Little League and a teener baseball team in the 1960s. In addition, he coached Little League age, teeners and adult baseball for nearly 30 years. Coach Glenn Herring passed away in 2011.
