LIMESTONEVILLE — Penn State Extension is sponsoring a field meeting from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Ziegler Farm near Limestoneville, Montour County. The farm is located just north of Limestoneville at 51 Ziegler Road, Milton.
The morning session of the field day will focus on cover crop plots planted at the farm in cooperation with a grant project funded by the USDA Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative. The plots feature various species of cover crops that are known to be productive in this region of the country. Data is being collected on the plots. Speakers from Penn State Extension will discuss nitrogen management with cover crops, weed suppression with cover crops, and using flowering cover crops for pollinator resources.
The afternoon session of the field day will give participants the opportunity to learn about various field implements that can be used for weed control on organic farms. Experienced organic farmers will discuss how to use each implement to maximize its effectiveness.
There is no fee to attend the field day. However, to facilitate a meal count, people interested in attending the event are asked to call (800) 851-9710 or (570) 988-3950 to register. You can also register by email to Beth Trautman at email@example.com. Please register before Sept. 4.
