Lycoming College religion professor releases new book

— WILLIAMSPORT — Dr. Richard Hughes, Lycoming College M.B. Rich professor of religion, recently completed his ninth book, “Religion, Law and the Present Water Crisis,” Published by Peter Lang Publishing Inc., copies are available for pre-order through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other authorized sellers.

In the new work, Hughes documents the global water crisis, opposing the commodification and private ownership of water by multinational companies. The book views water as a symbol of the sacred and further asserts that all bodies of freshwater are common and should be protected by the public trust doctrine. Hughes synthesizes water studies from religions, theologies and law doctrines from around the world in order to push the necessity of clean water for all people.

Hughes has taught courses in theology, ethics, comparative religions and existential studies. He has published numerous books and essays on theology, biblical studies, depth psychology, ethics and law. Hughes, who earned a doctorate from Boston University, has traveled, written, studied and taught across the globe, including serving in churches, prisons and hospitals throughout the U.S. He has also received academic awards for research projects from the Louisville Institute/Lilly Endowment and the Szondi Foundation of Switzerland.
