Wifi marketing plan on hold in Sunbury

SUNBURY — The Northumberland County Industrial Development Authority tabled a motion to commit $20,000 toward a Sunbury Revitalization Inc. marketing plan to draw entrepreneurs to the city with Internet access.

County Planning Commission Director Pat Mack, who also works as director of the authority, said the voting members wanted more information before making a final decision at the Tuesday morning meeting.

SRI is committing $5,000 worth of volunteer and staff hours and the city is committing $5,000 to support the plan.

In a 16-page report developed by Sire Advertising, it was recommended that SRI capitalize on the city’s access to high-speed Internet to brand Sunbury as a “technology hot spot and create buzz or excitement surrounding the benefit.”

While no businesses are on the horizon, SRI is looking to attract firms with large data transfers or satellite offices of corporations.

The marketing strategy will utilize email, social media, local university alumni publications and professional trade publications to reach the target demographic.

The county authority consists of city Councilman John Shipman, Commissioners Vinny Clausi and Stephen Bridy, Chairman Ned Sodrick, Prothonotary Justin Dunkelberger, Joe Pancerella and Tony Fiorenza.

The Industrial Development Authority is involved with approval of Keystone Opportunity Zones, revolving loan funds for economic development, various projects and facilitating bond issues.

The money, if committed, would come from Industrial Development Authority budget that is funded through the state and Community Development Block Grants, Mack said.
