HAC champions dominate all-star teams

SUNBURY — In addition to claiming its first District 4 Class AA title since 1999, Danville also put the most players onto the 2012 Heartland Athletic Conference All-Star team, as selected recently by the league’s head coaches.

Danville, the HAC-I champs with a 6-0 HAC-I record, placed six players on the Division I offensive first team, along with three on the defensive first team.

Junior quarterback Weston Baylor headlines Danville’s honorees. He was seventh in the HAC in passing this year with 79 completions for-1,107 yards. Baylor’s favorite targets, senior tight end Bret Berg and junior wide receiver Zack Kozick, joined him on the first team.

The Ironmen’s leading rusher — junior Sam Dressler — and senior lineman Mason Fausnaught and sophomore kicker Shayne Riley rounded out the team’s first-team honorees on offense.

Danville’s players to earn spots on the first team defensive unit were junior linebacker Eric Haney, senior defensive back Cale Rice and junior back Kozick.

Along with the players selected from Danville, Jim Keiser was named the HAC-I Coach of the Year after his fourth season at the helm of the Ironmen.

Selinsgrove, which finished behind Danville in the Division I standings, had senior lineman Harley Stahl named to the first team on both offense and defense. Also named to the defensive first team for the Seals were senior linebacker Mike Walter and junior linebacker Conner Leisenfeld, plus Tyler Krebs at both defensive back and punter.

Other notable first-team selections were Mifflinburg junior Nazar Mironenko on both offensive and defensive lines, plus Milton senior Ryan Solomon on offensive line and linebacker and junior defensive back Jayson English, and Shikellamy junior running back Dwayne Pepper and senior defensive back Scott Snyder.

In Division II, Lewisburg and Mount Carmel both had four players selected to the first team.

For the Green Dragons, senior Brandon Smith was a first-teamer at both running back and linebacker, while senior Kyle Santorine was selected at offensive line and Max Reed at kicker.

The Red Tornadoes’ first-team selections included senior O-lineman Mike Scicchitano, wide receiver Rob Varano, D-lineman Eric Joraskie and junior defensive back Mike Gilger.

Division champ Central Columbia placed seven combined players on the first team, as well as having Jason Hippenstiel being named the Coach of the Year.

After rolling to the HAC-III title and the District 4 Class A championship, Southern Columbia was well-represented on the 2012 All-Star team.

On offense, the Tigers’ selections were senior lineman Ryan Cherwinski, junior running back Adam Feudale, senior tight end Jake Becker and kicker Dylan Swank.

Southern’s defensive picks went to Becker and sophomore  lineman Trent Donlan, senior linebacker Tony Chiavaroli and senior defensive backs Bryce Parry and Joe Kleman.

Two teams that finished close behind Southern in the standings — Bloomsburg and South Williamsport — had a total of eight and four players named to the first team, respectively.

Among the Panthers’ first-team honorees were junior quarterback Ricky Klingerman, plus wide receivers John and Colby Klingerman. John Klingerman was also a first-team defensive back for Bloomsburg.

The Mounties’ Chris Eiswerth was the Division III’s Coach of the Year.
