SELINSGROVE — On Sept. 17, Selinsgrove Elementary School hosted a Literacy Night for second grade families. Thirty families started the night with a pizza dinner in the cafeteria. Following the dinner, students went to a different area of the school to learn some reading comprehension and fluency strategies. During this time, parents were introduced to the same reading strategies plus additional ideas to use at home to reinforce reading comprehension and fluency skills. At the end of the night, parents and students were reunited to practice the activities they both learned.
Each family attending Literacy Night received a Selinsgrove Elementary Seals tote bag filled with the tools they would need to continue using these activities at home. Items in the goodie bag included a comprehension beach ball, Post-it notes, main idea bookmark, question wheel, graphic organizers, Jack Prelutsky’s A Pizza the Size of the Sun poetry book and a non-fiction book titled, One Nation by Devin Scillian.
Susquehanna University student teachers and volunteers assisted in babysitting the younger siblings. Literacy Night is also coming up for kindergarten on Nov. 19 and first grade on Oct. 24.
