Midd-West School District Superintendent Wesley Knapp resigns

— MIDDLEBURG — After nearly five years as the Midd-West School Superintendent, Dr. Wesley L. Knapp tendered his resignation Monday, which was unanimously accepted by the school board on Monday evening.

Knapp’s resignation was given to board president Victor Abate at 1 p.m. Monday. “That’s when I had his signed letter,” Abate said.

Details of the letter were not made available Monday night. Asked why Knapp resigned, Abate, on advice of district’s solicitor Orris Knepp, declined to comment at this time.

The resignation takes effect Dec. 31. Until then Knapp will remain on leave. During his tenure, Knapp oversaw major building programs in the district.

Daphne Snook, currently the district’s assistant superintendent, was named substitute superintendent effective immediately, through Dec. 31.

Until then, and up to Jan. 1, Abate said, “We will be actively looking for a new superintendent.”

After the meeting, Abate handed out a public statement. It read in part, “Dr. Knapp, who has worked as a professional educator for 53 years, has decided to step aside after serving a significant part of his career as the chief executive officer in various parts of the country, the last five years being in this district. His contract would have run until 2016.”

Knapp, the letter continued, “believes that his exit now will give the newly elected board expected this December the opportunity to seek a superintendent who will share the goals of the new board and give them the opportunity to pursue those goals. Dr. Knapp promised the district five years of service when he signed on nearly five years ago, and, by the end of December 2013, he will have fulfilled that promise.

“Dr. Knapp believes that everyone has to stand down some time, and this seems like the right time.”
