Midd-West Relay For Life Signature Quilt

The Daily Item

— BEAVER SPRINGS — A signature quilt will be auctioned off during the Midd-West Relay For Life — Basket Auction on June 21 at noon at the Beaver Community Fairgrounds in Beaver Springs. The quilt will be on display at the Relay event prior to the auction on June 20-21.

The queen-sized signature quilt consisting of 36 blocks and measures 88 by 92-inches was designed by Paulette Ax using Relay For Life T-shirts. The photos featured on the quilts are the honorary chairpersons over the past nine years. It was quilted by Paulette’s Quilt Shop on Red Bank Road, Middleburg.

The signature quilt was the project of the All in the Family team. Ruth Lizardi was instrumental in this undertaking. Lizardi gave Ax a pile of Midd-West T-shirts asking, “Can we use these? Can we do this?”

Paulette Ax planned the layout of the sashing, how to incorporate the signatures, and collected the coordinating fabrics. “Then Paulette handed me three pizza boxes filled with quilt patches. I even had to buy special (fabric) pens for the signatures,” explained Lizardi.

Then the All in the Family team began fundraising. People could purchase a block with 13 signatures so families, Relay teams, or organizations could be on one block. Or signatures could be purchased individually. The blocks traveled as far away as Mississippi and North Carolina.

Arrive early to get your number and have time for lunch at one of the many stands. Additional information about the quilt is available by calling Lizardi at (570) 539-8727. For questions about the basket auction, call Ange at (570) 658-2924. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society, Midd-West Relay For Life.
