Home owner escapes Selinsgrove house fire on Sunday

SELINSGROVE — A Sunday afternoon fire destroyed a home at 11 Linda Lane after the house’s owner escaped from the building.

Rebecca Wilson was home when the fire started at around 3 p.m. in the kitchen area of her house, according to Brandon Ulrich, assistant fire chief of Dauntless Hook & Ladder Company.

“She just said the house was on fire, and she got out,” Ulrich said.

The cause of the fire was not apparent Sunday.

A state police fire marshal is scheduled to arrive this morning to investigate and give a damage estimate.

Smoke and heat damage took their toll on parts of the house that weren’t burned, Ulrich said. “The house is a total loss,” he added.

Wilson lived at the home alone, Ulrich said, and has fire insurance. He did not have an estimate of damages.

Wilson, who declined to comment, had been contacted by the Red Cross. After bringing the fire under control, firefighters were able to salvage some of Wilson’s belongings, such as clothes. Drawers of her possessions were placed on a tarp on a neighbor’s lawn for Wilson to sort through.

The fire was under control by 5:15 p.m.

Linda Lane was crowded with fire trucks from and firefighters from 11 fire departments: Selinsgrove, Hummels Wharf, Middleburg, Sunbury, Freeburg, Kreamer, Kratzerville, Mifflinburg, Northumberland, Shamokin Dam and New Berlin. The Selinsgrove ambulance also responded.
