SELINSGROVE — A 31-year-old Beaver Springs woman was jailed Wednesday for allegedly purchasing $700 in merchandise from several Snyder County stores using counterfeit checks.
Jessica Carol Walter is accused of using seven fake American Express Travelers checks at stores in the Susquehanna Valley Mall and Monroe Marketplace between Sept. 24 and 26, state police at Selinsgrove said.
The next day, an M&T Bank employee contacted police to report counterfeit checks being used at area businesses.
Police were able to trace the checks to Walter, who had provided her driver’s license to a store clerk who had asked for identification when she used one of the fake checks to make a purchase, court records said.
Walter also was identified by other store clerks as the customer who paid for items with counterfeit checks, court records said.
She was arraigned on felony forgery and theft by deception charges by District Judge John H. Reed and sent to the Snyder County Jail in lieu of $35,000 bail pending a preliminary hearing on Feb. 3.
