Shade tree panel earns conservation award

— SELINSGROVE — The Selinsgrove Shade Tree Commission has been chosen to receive the 2013 Forestry Conservation of the Year award.

The conservation district’s Snyder County board of directors and staff selected the Shade Tree Commission for its efforts to conserve trees on public land in the borough.

The commission — composed of board members Joan Fasold, Don Rowe, Bo Fasold and Jeremy Smallwood — has been working to reverse a trend noted in a Susquehanna University study that Selinsgrove had lost about 51 percent of its trees in the past 30 years.

In the past two years, the commission has planted nearly 100 trees with the help of volunteers from the community and Susquehanna University. Another 15 trees will be planted this spring, Joan Fasold said.

The state Department of Natural Resources foresters Gerald Hoy and Vinnie Cotrone help coordinate the planting program, which is funded in part by the Rudy Gelnett Trust and donations from residents, such as Helen Keiser.

The commission will be honored by the county Conservation District at the annual awards banquet at 6:30 p.m. March 15 at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 3939 Park Road, Selinsgrove.
