Group raises thousands of dollars for Rudy Gelnett Memorial Library

SELINSGROVE — Friends of Selinsgrove Library recently gave a $12,000 donation to the newly renamed Rudy Gelnett Memorial Library, bringing the total amount of contributions in the past decade to more than $125,000.

“It’s tremendously helpful. We rely on them,” said Snyder County Libraries Executive Director Pam Ross.

The funds help offset the library’s operating costs, including children’s programs, the book delivery service to shut-ins and equipment and book purchases.

Liz Heim, president of Friends of Selinsgrove Library, said the group was founded in 2003 to raise money for and awareness about the community library.

The group raises money through its 120 members who pay a fee of between $5 a year and $200 for a lifetime membership and several annual fundraisers, including Tree Fest, crock sales, quilt raffle and year-round book sale at the High Street library.

Heim said the group will soon be renamed to align with the newly refurbished and renamed Rudy Gelnett Memorial Library. The 14-member board meets at 4:30 p.m. every second Wednesday of the month, except in July and August, at the library.

Meanwhile, the library board is nearing its capital campaign goal to raise $3.6 million for the new building, Ross said.
