Books For Babes: Bringing “Book Love” to Children

— SELINSGROVE — The Susquehanna Valley Reading Council (SVRC) hopes that visions of reading and books dance through the heads of youngsters in the Susquehanna Valley. During the holiday season SVRC distributes books to young readers each holiday season in an effort to spread the love of reading. The Babes for Books project purchases books for disadvantaged preschool children aged 3, 4, and 5 living in Columbia, Northumberland, Montour, Snyder and Union counties. The purpose of the program is to encourage the families of these children to see the value of reading and books. SVRC also hopes to instill the idea that books are a valuable gift.

On Nov. 13, SVRC members, friends, and Susquehanna University students gathered at St. Pius X Church for this annual community project to promote literacy and bring “book-love” to the area’s youngest children. Volunteers wrapped and labeled approximately 600 books for the Babes for Books project.

Anyone who has a love of literacy is invited to join the Susquehanna Valley Reading Council. Contact Angie Marcinek at SVRC is also participating in the 10th Annual Tree Fest of Children’s Books held at the Selinsgrove Community Library from Dec. 3-20. It is located at 1 N. High St. Members of SVRC will decorate their tree on Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. with the book theme “The Night before Christmas” by Jan Brett.
