Alumni group forming in Selinsgrove area

SELINSGROVE — Each month, Robert Soper joins a dozen or so other 1948 Selinsgrove High School graduates at a Shamokin Dam restaurant.

“As you grow older, you’re not as active, so this is a good way to get out and share some camaraderie,” Soper said. “There’s a lot of pride in Selinsgrove and the school.”

Members of the Class of 1948 aren’t the only Selinsgrove alumni who get together on a regular basis to discuss coming reunions and share stories and laughter, and a group of graduates representing a wide range of years hopes to harness that friendship and school pride by forming an alumni association.

“It’s an opportunity to reconnect with alumni and be supportive of one another, not only focusing on the high school, but the entire district,” said Lowell Leitzel, a 1972 graduate who moved back to Selinsgrove two years ago after spending 32 years teaching French in a southern Maryland public school.

Last year, his high school class held its 40-year reunion, and about 70 of the 220 class members attended.

Leitzel’s classmate and former school board President Eric Rowe is spearheading the effort to establish the Selinsgrove Area High School Alumni Association and Legacy Foundation and is certain the interest is there.

“My wife was on Facebook and saw that people are trying to connect with classmates,” he said.

Social media is a popular way for people to reconnect with childhood friends and classmates, but Selinsgrove Area High School senior Ellen Spriggle said a formal alumni association would be another way to keep that connection intact.

“I think it’s important to use every possible way to stay connected,” said Spriggle, who created the fledgling association’s logo.

Rowe said the aim is to get as many alumni, faculty and parents involved in forming an association that will build networks, assist in organizing reunions, host community- and school-based events and encourage alumni support of the district’s educational, cultural and athletic programs.

“We’re not asking for a lot,” he said. “Just join, be a part of the school community and spread the word.”

There is a one-time charge for a lifetime membership of $25 per person or $40 per couple. Applications are available at the school district website at www.seal-pa.org and then search under the alumni tab.
