Midd-West board mum on Knapp

— MIDDLEBURG — Midd-West school board members are staying mum on Monday’s abrupt resignation of Superintendent Wesley L. Knapp pending the completion of a separation agreement.

Board President Victor Abate said Tuesday he expected the agreement — which spells out the terms of Knapp’s departure from the district after nearly five years — will be available to the public within a day or two. Knapp did not return a call for comment Tuesday evening.

When asked pointedly what led to Knapp’s resignation, Abate paused and said some answers would be found in the four-page written agreement.

“We are not allowed to discuss it until the agreement is executed,” he said.

Knapp handed in a letter of resignation Monday afternoon, more than three years before his contract was scheduled to expire at the end of November 2016. The resignation was unanimously accepted at a public meeting later that evening.

The resignation takes effect Dec. 31, but Knapp immediately took a leave of absence through the end of the year.

In the meantime, Daphne Snook, the assistant superintendent, will helm the district through the end of December as the board searches for a full-time replacement.

The resignation came as a surprise to many.

Just a little over a month ago, in mid-September, the board voted to increase Knapp’s annual $118,404 salary by 2.5 percent, effective Dec. 1.

Knapp declined the $2,960 raise, citing tough economic conditions.
