— SHAMOKIN DAM -- At least five fire companies are on the scene of an apparent attic fire at an apartment complex at 28 Helen St. in Shamokin Dam.
The fire began at the rear left building of the three garden-style apartment complexes at about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, when lightning struck the roof.
"I saw this big orange ball, then heard this loud boom," said Ron Laniewski, who lives across the street from the complex and called 911, he told the Daily Item.
Laniewski and neighbor Mike Gaugher ran into the apartment building and knocked on doors for people to get out. Most residents were not at home, he said.
Heavy rains this morning appear to have helped the effort, though firefighters accessed the roof from a ladder truck, using axes and saws to cut into it.
"There is a fire in there," said one fireman from Selinsgrove. "It's in the attack."
No fire was visible from the outside except from low rising smoke coming from under the roof.
More details to come as they become available.
