Grants will help fund Selinsgrove street lights

DANVILLE — SELINSGROVE — The borough of Selinsgrove has more than $460,000 in federal and local grants for decorative lighting.

The borough installed several decorative street lamps along a section of Market Street in the center of the downtown about seven years ago and will use the additional funds for the next phase, adding another 28 or so ornamental street lamps, said borough manager Paul Williams.

The borough secured a $402,500 grant from the federal Transportation Alternatives Program to purchase the lamps and another $65,000 from the Selinsgrove Chamber of Commerce — money that was remaining from the first phase — to cover design and engineering costs. Williams said the borough will be pitching in another $17,000 for the project.

The plan is to extend the lighting on North Market to Spruce Street and East Chestnut, to West Chestnut from North High and East Pine from Market Street to Water Street.

Council President Brian Farrell said the additional lighting will enhance the borough and increase safety.

“We have a lot of dark spots, especially on East Pine Street,” he said.

Williams said a third phase is planned to extend the lighting on South Market and onto the Susquehanna University campus.
