SELINSGROVE — Moments before a new steeple was to be raised atop St. Pius X Catholic Church off Fairview Drive on Thursday morning, a flaw was detected in the tower.
The Rev. Daniel Powell was hesitant to elaborate on the problem, but said the steeple will be repaired and returned to the church in about two weeks.
“My goal was to have it by Christmas,” he said.
The original steeple, donated by Hepco Construction, of Selinsgrove, was toppled during a strong storm in July.
A replacement was made by Munns Manufacturing Inc., a Waynesboro, Va., company that specializes in church steeples.
The new 30-foot steeple was set to be placed on top of the church roof early Thursday, but problems arose almost immediately when a second and larger crane had to be summoned.
Then someone noticed the louvers on the steeple, where the sounds of the bells are emitted, were closed, restricting the chimes from being heard.
The steeple was returned to Virginia for repairs and should be back in Selinsgrove in early December, Powell said.
