NORTHUMBERLAND — The Northumberland Alumni Association announces a recent $300 gift from the former Northumberland High School Class of 1957 to support the association’s scholarship fund. The alumni association established an endowment fund with the Central Susquehanna Community Foundation (CSCF) in 2012 to provide annual scholarships for Northumberland students. The alumni association has provided scholarship assistance to students of Northumberland borough and Point Township since 1958.
Originally, the fund would have ended on the 50th anniversary of the last graduating class of the former Northumberland High School but a gift from the late Victor Gubin, a local businessman, grew the fund significantly. After witnessing the benefit of the scholarship fund in assisting students with the costs of higher education, the association voted in 2012 to endow the fund with CSCF so it could continue to provide educational support to 0Northumberland and Point Township students.
“We encourage anyone who attended any school in Northumberland to come to our Alumni Association meetings,” said Lou Latasha, president of the Alumni Association. “Our next meeting on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. in the borough building is important because we will vote to change the bylaws to reflect the name change from the Northumberland High School Alumni Association to the Northumberland Alumni Association and open the membership to all those who attended any school in Northumberland.”
The Alumni Association is looking for volunteers and those interested in furthering the mission of the organization as it seeks to grow its endowment fund. The alumni association has an information pamphlet available at the borough building or for additional information, contact Lou Latsha at (570) 473-3222 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
