SUNBURY — On Saturday, Dec. 7, railcar owners from the all over the Northeastern United States will be riding on the North Shore Railroad from Northumberland to Berwick and return to collect toys and cash donations for the annual Toys for Tots campaign. This will be the 10th year that the North Shore Railroad has hosted NARCOA. The North Shore Railroad employees have also been collecting toys and the railroad has also made monetary donations to Toys for Tots.
Gary Shields, president of the North Shore, stated that the North Shore Railroad is pleased to have the visitors ride and help the Marine Corps League with their annual project.
NARCOA is a national organization that restores railcars and charters railroads around the country for excursions. The railcars or speeders were used by the railroads for track inspection and maintenance. Most railroads now use trucks equipped with rail wheels and the railcars were sold off to individuals. For more information on NARCOA, visit their website narcoa.org.
The group will be leaving Northumberland at 8:30 a.m., arriving at the Danville High School between 9 and 9:30, Rupert between 10 and 10:15, Bloomsburg between 10:30 and 11, and Berwick between 12:30 and 1. The times are approximate based on weather conditions.
Please meet them along the tracks with your donations. In 2012, the group collected two pickup loads of toys which were desperately needed to fill requests. They also raised almost $2,000. There are many families in the Union, Snyder, and Northumberland county area that are finding it difficult to provide toys for their children this year. Your help will make many Christmas mornings happier.
If you have any questions, please email event coordinator Larry Maynard at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you are unable to meet the railcar riders along the tracks, please drop off a toy or several at any Toys for Tots drop-box.
