SUNBURY — Eight Shikellamy forensics team members qualified for the Catholic Forensics League National Tournament that will be held in Philadelphia over the Memorial Day weekend.
Saturday’s event at Dallas High School in Dallas, Pa., involved15 schools from the Scranton Diocese of the National Catholic Forensics League.
The top four competitors in each of nine events advanced to the national championships and will represent the diocese at the Philadelphia championship tournament.
Eight Shikellamy students will be included in the group traveling to Philadelphia.
Ellen Boyer, forensics adviser and coach, said, “This impressive achievement marks one of the best Shikellamy finishes at the CFL event in the team’s 30-year history. I am extremely proud of this entire team for its exemplary performance.”
Not only did Shikellamy qualify eight students to nationals, but also four of those members received championship honors.
Senior Tyler Stettler led the team, capturing first place honors in Dramatic Performance. Stettler is a four-time national qualifier for Shikellamy.
Also capturing top honors were seniors Alyssa Zuback and Kellen Kane, who were the champions in Duo Interpretation. This will be their third time qualifying to nationals in the event. Following in their footsteps was junior Shelby Snyder, who also placed first in finals to win the championship in Oral Interpretation. She will be attending her second CFL National.
Second-place finishers for Shikellamy were junior Rebeka Yocum in Oral Interpretation and sophomore Annie Herbster in Declamation. Yocum placed sixth in Declamation at the Baltimore CFL Nationals last year.
Herbster is also a two-time national qualifier in her event. Sophomores Aaron Shaffer-Neitz and Garrett Ruths rounded out the Shikellamy qualifiers with their third-place finish in Public Forum Debate.
Several Shikellamy students advanced to the final rounds of this prestigious competition and will serve as alternates for the national championship event.
Junior Daniella Snyder placed fifth in Original Oratory, freshman Hannah Gale placed fifth in Declamation, and senior Alex Wetzel finished sixth in Dramatic Performance.
Coaches Boyer, Eric Zeigler, Craig Specht and Martha Krieger will accompany the team to Philadelphia.
