Sunbury City Council reviews grant options

SUNBURY — How the city allocates thousands of dollars of state grant money — some of which is on hold  — was the subject of discussion at Monday night’s council meeting.

Jaime Shrawder, project coordinator for community development with SEDA-Council of Governments, brought the council up to date regarding the 2012 Community Development Block Grant projects and guidelines that would have to be adhered to in order to spend that money on community improvements.

“There is $180,692 of 2011-2012 CDBG money that is not moving anywhere now,” she said. “But we have to be prepared for when that money becomes available.” Among the projects under consideration are street reconstruction and fire hydrant availability.

Shrawder said there was about $50,000 available now for sidewalk improvements, but that money can only be spent in neighborhoods where low-income homeowners qualify.

“I’d call that my most immediate, timely priority,” she said.

Under consideration for those improvements are homes on Third Street, from Reagan Street to Packer Street.“I want to get the street work funded as soon as possible,” she said.

Later in the meeting, council solicitor Michael Apfelbaum said several “nuisance properties would be added to the list of blighted homes.” Hopefully, he said, this will motivate the homeowners to make repairs.
