Prizes await those who trim weight in Sunbury

SUNBURY — It’s time for the third annual “Sunbury Challenge 4 Health,” and once again the Sunbury Community Hospital and the city have joined forces to help promote healthy living.

“As in the two previous years, our goal is to bring an awareness of health and wellness to lives of those that live in Sunbury and surrounding communities” said Bruce Marion, director of marketing at Sunbury Community Hospital.

In 2011 there were 250 individuals who participated and lost a combined weight of 500 pounds, while in 2012, fewer than 200 people participated and a combined weight of 300 was lost.

But don’t let the numbers fool you because in 2012 the challenge actually lost more of a percentage in weight then in 2011, Marion said.

This year, Marion said, “We want to see more people participate.”

“We are very excited about all the additional activities planned for this year,” Marion said.

“We will be adding weekly prizes for most miles walked and highest percentage of weight loss for registered participants. We will also be challenging area group and business to participant with an opportunity to be chosen as one of the healthiest businesses in Sunbury.”

The 2013 Challenge committee include Terry Specht, Sunbury City Clerk, and Cheryl Delsite, of the city clerk’s office, Brianna Kula, attorney from Apfelbaum Law offices and Cathy Keister, Barb Aucker and Marion, all of the Sunbury Community Hospital. The committee met last week to begin planning.

“We are planning to present the first annual “travelling trophy” to the group or business that loses the most percentage of weight, Aucker said.

“Any number of participants from groups and businesses can participate since the winning group is determined by percentage of overall weight lost, not the total amount of weight,” Aucker said.

For every pound of weight lost, a pound of food will be donated to area food banks.

The kick-off of the challenge will be held  from 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 29 in the waiting room area of the former ER section at Sunbury Community Hospital.

Maps will again be distributed to participants showing one-half and full mile courses in several different locations within the city. Individuals will also receive official Sunbury Challenge for Health registration forms to keep a record of their achievements during June. Other health tip information and brochures will also be provided throughout the month.

The committee invites everyone to help make our community a healthier place to live. If you have any questions, or would like more information, contact Bruce Marion, Marketing Director, Sunbury Community Hospital at 286-3372.
