SUNBURY — Jonathon Bartholomew, a Sunbury native and Lycoming College junior, recently auditioned for the Jersey Surf, a World-Class Drum and Bugle Corps.
Bartholomew was one of a select group of performers hand-picked to play in the New Jersey based organization. He will be performing in the highest level of competition, comprised of over 20 groups of 150 15-22 years olds.
Bartholomew attended two audition camps in November and December that tested his musicality and performance skills. There, he met, rehearsed, and socialized with hundreds of other hopefuls over two weekends of intense instruction. Candidates were given critiques of their skills and the opportunity to prove themselves on multiple levels. While many will have to spend a little more time working on those skills, there are many, like Bartholomew, who will be continuing on.
Now that the audition process is over, Bartholomew will now be attending regular training camps with Surf. There, he will be learning to master the musical and performance techniques needed to compete with the best groups in the country. Once June hits, he will be boarding a fleet of tour busses to begin the competitive season, which lasts until mid-August. It will conclude at Lucas Oil Stadium with the Drum Corps International World Championships in Indianapolis.
