Write a letter to a Staten Island kid!

NORTHUMBERLAND — The people who live on Staten Island, N.Y., continue to recover from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy but  still need help. The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Susquehanna Valley (UUCSV) in Northumberland has launched the next phase of its project to help the storm victims.

This part of the project is to write letters of support, make cards or create drawings to let the young people of Staten Island know they are not forgotten. A first batch of letters, written by students at

Danville Middle School — who also know firsthand what it means to lose something in a flood — was delivered to the Unitarian Church of Staten Island at Christmas. They were distributed to kids all over the

island.

UUCSV will be sending two more batches this spring to the Staten Island church, which will distribute them. We are looking for notes or letters in both English and Spanish — or Russian or Arabic, as there is a large immigrant population there.

Collection mailboxes have been placed at libraries in seven Valley communities on the Susquehanna

River:

— Bloomsburg: Bloomsburg Public Library, 225 Market St.

— Danville: Thomas Beaver Free Library, 205 Ferry St.

— Lewisburg: Public Library for Union County, 250 Reitz Boulevard

— Milton: Milton Public Library, 541 Broadway

— Northumberland: Priestley Forsyth Memorial Library, 100 King St.

— Selinsgrove: Rudy Gelnett Memorial Library, 1 N. High St.

— Sunbury: Degenstein Community Library, 40 S. Fifth St.

Letters will be collected on May 1. United Parcel Service in Lewisburg has offered to pay for the mailing costs of all the letters. Their manager, Allison Hall, is a Staten Island native. UPS also donated the boxes that were used to build the collection mailboxes.

UUCSV is also continuing its gift card program to help the adults on Staten Island. To date, more than $9,000 worth of Giant/Stop-and-Shop, Home Depot and Sears gift cards have been sent. To make a contribution, make your check payable to UUCSV (with “Sandy Relief” in the memo line) and send it to: Treasurer, UUCSV, 265 Point Township Drive, Suite A, Northumberland, PA 17857.

UUCSV is located on Route 11, Northumberland. For more information visit www.uucsv.org.
