Young speedsters take awards in downhill races

— SUNBURY — It’s not NASCAR — it’s better!

About 35 racers revved it up Sunday morning on Market Street for the 12th annual soap box derby, held as part of the Sunbury Celebration 2013. The popular event saw these speedy racers emerge victorious:

Age 8

First place, Tyler Roush; second place, Lawrence Henry; third place, Logan Fisher.

Age 9

First place, Hannah Garinger; second place, Taylor Welsh; third place, Kyle Schaeffer.

Age 10

First place, Eli McKercher; second place, Steven Shambach; third place, Paul Snyder.

Age 11

First place, Baryn Emerich; second place, Gaven Shambach; third place, Cole Schaeffer.

Age 12

First place, Madelyn Ackley; second place, Tucker Roush; third place, Marillen Castle.

The Sunbury Eagles No. 503 ran the race, said Jodi Scholvin, event chairwoman, along with help from the Shikellamy Area High School football team and members of the junior reserve officers training corp.

Sunbury Textile Mills Inc. sponsored T-shirts, and Tulpehocken Spring Water Inc. donated water to keep those hot rodders cool. Trophies and medallions came from Roger’s Trophies and Paul Stine Chevrolet, a Mark Monahan Dealership.
