Quizzo Tournament To Aid Scholarship Fund And Shikellamy Outdoor Education Fund

— SUNBURY — The Hotel Edison in Sunbury will host the seventh annual Bill Hoover Memorial Quizzo Tournament on July 7. Quizzo starts promptly at 8 p.m. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the William Hoover Memorial Scholarship Fund which awards Shikellamy seniors with a monetary scholarship to assist with college. This year three scholarships were awarded to three Shikellamy seniors. In the past six years, 14 students have been awarded the monetary scholarship. In addition, a portion of this year’s proceeds will be donating to the Shikellamy Outdoor Education “Save Fifth Grade Camp” Fund. Hoover taught fifth grade for many years and chaperoned this annual event.

Bill Hoover passed away in February 2008 after a long and brave battle with cancer. Bill was the type of man that symbolized what a person should be.

Hoover was born in Sunbury in 1947, and was raised in the Odd Fellows Orphanage in Sunbury from 1951-1965. His future could have taken any path, but he opted to educate himself and be the best man he could be. He taught fifth grade at Steel and CW Rice elementary schools in Northumberland. Later he taught both fourth and fifth grade at Edison Elementary and Chief Shikellamy Schools in Sunbury. He retired from education in 2004 after 33½ years of service with the Shikellamy School District. He touched the lives of thousands of students throughout his career. He was a life long Sunbury resident and loved the city.

Last year’s Quizzo Tournament raised more than $4,800 for the scholarship fund and Save Fifth Grade Camp and more than 200 people attended the event.

Quizzo is a pub trivia game that consists of 40 questions divided into four rounds of play. Teams can have up to six players, and questions vary and can include anything from pop culture to science, sports and general knowledge. Jon Mackey will host the tournament.

The cost to enter the event is $30 per team and one non-perishable food item for Shikellamy’s Caring for Kids food program. No more than six  players will be allowed on one team. Last year’s tournament sold out so be sure to reserve a table early. Call the Hotel Edison at (570) 286-5605 to reserve a table.
