HS Football notebook: HAC-I rivals last teams standing

HAC-I rivals last teams standing

Danville junior Zack Kozick, who scored the winning touchdown and helped preserve the win with an interception, said the fact that few people believed they could win made this victory even more special.

"We were huge underdogs. It's almost the story of our season, and I think this showed everybody that we are worth of (being) district champions."

Danville play unbeaten District 3 champion Wyomissing (13-0) at noon on Saturday at HersheyPark Stadium. The Ironmen are in the state quarterfinals for the first time in program history while the Spartans, led by Notre Dame recruit Alex Anzalone at linebacker, lost in the District 3 title game to eventual state champion Lancaster Catholic in last year' opening round.

STAYING WITH THEM: From the first Mount Carmel score to the last, Danville had an answer every time and never fell behind more than one score, before breaking the tie for good with Kozick's TD catch from Weston Baylor.

Berg said that was vital to his team's chances of winning.

"I felt if our team got down, (Mount Carmel) would get more fired up. They're a great team and if they can put it to you they will, so we felt that we needed to do that."

RARE DOUBLE: With Friday's victory, Danville joined Montoursville as the only schools in District 4 to win at least two district titles in two different classifications.

The Ironmen have now won two titles in Class AA (1992 and 2012) and two in Class AAA (1998 and 1999). Montoursville has won seven titles in two classifications, including three in Class AAA (1986, 1990, 1994) and four in Class AA (1987, 1989, 2005, 2006).

The only other school in District 4 to win titles in two different classifications is South Williamsport, which won the AA title in 1997 and the A crown in 1989.
