Land Rover to present its first hybrid SUV

Associated Press — In Frankfurt , Germany next month, Land Rover will present its first hybrid SUV, which combines a Diesel engine with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery for a total power of 340 hp. The model is slated to launch in early 2014.

For its entry into the hybrid market, Land Rover chose to combine a 3L SDV6 engine with an electric motor for a total power of 340 hp. The new model will be available in two versions: Range Rover Hybrid and Range Rover Sport Hybrid. Both have an average fuel consumption of 37 mpg.

To show off the performance of its new, more eco-friendly SUV, Range Rover will retrace the famous Silk Road, taking three of the new vehicles on a 9942 mile journey to Mumbai, India, for an expected arrival on Oct. 15. The choice of this destination is significant, as Land Rover now belongs to the Mumbai-based group Tata Motors.

The Range Rover Hybrid will have its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show , ahead of its commercial release early next year.
