Silver Bowl celebrates 80th birthday

By Mary Rose Latorre

This fall the Mount Carmel Area Silver Bowl, home of the Red Tornadoes, is celebrating its 80th birthday. The formal ceremony was held on the Aug. 31 at the season opener against Shikellamy and the celebration will continue throughout the year.

The Silver Bowl was built in 1932 by a committee of businessmen from Mount Carmel. It originally seated more than 6,000 people. In 1940, additional seats were added to accommodate more than10,000 fans. The original press box was completed in 1972, and was recently renovated along with many other changes throughout the stadium.

The Silver Bowl gets its name from the silver color of the bleachers that surrounded the stadium. At that time, when you stood on the top of the bleachers it truly appeared to be a Silver Bowl. Today the Silver Bowl houses many events, ranging from the state's winningest football program to the Special Athletes Olympics, to the Relay for Life event.

Happy 80th Birthday to the Silver Bowl!
