Nolde House stars in tour of historic properties

The Nolde House in Cumru Township was a centerpiece attraction Saturday at the annual 4 Centuries in Berks Historic Property Tour, a fundraiser for the Berks History Center, formerly the Historical Society of Berks County.

Participants in the tour got to visit 10 local architectural treasures, including the home that is part of the Nolde Forest Environmental Center. Friends of Nolde offered meals and presented a skit about the Nolde family that once lived on the property.

The homes on this year's tour were in the area of Cumru Township and Shillington. Initially settled by Welsh immigrants in the 1720s, the region attracted German settlers in the mid-18th century. The region's settlers built stone manor houses, schoolhouses and cottages nestled on tracts once owned by the descendants of William Penn.
