Early lead not enough for Upper Dauphin

— YORK — Mackenzie Ney broke a 55-yard run early in the first quarter on Upper Dauphin’s first drive of the game for the opening score and a 7-0 lead, but for the Trojans, that would be the only lead of the night they held, as York Catholic had a big second half en route to a 35-14 win in the District 3 Class A semifinals at York Catholic High School on Friday night.

Ney ended his night with a team-high 151 rushing yards while Trey Campbell added 88 and a touchdown score late in the third quarter.

York Catholic (8-3) answered Upper Dauphin’s (7-4-1) score with a string of four unanswered touchdowns in the second and third quarters before Campbell’s 3 yard scamper to make it a 28-14 York Catholic game.

The Fighting Irish tied the game with 11:03 in the second quarter when hakeem Kinard ran it in from 13 yards out. Qua’Shawn Grooms then reeled in a 25 yard pass from Kinard with 6:34 to play to take the lead, 14-7.

Jack Burnside single-handedly put the Fighting Irish up by two more scores when he ran it in from two and one yard, respectively, in the third quarter.

He tacked on a third touchdown early in the fourth quarter when he had a 4-yard run. Burnside ended his night wtih just 39 rushing yards, but three touchdown scores while Kinard had 192 yards and a score on the ground and went 6-for-14 for 79 yards through the air.
