Dinosaurs and butterflies return to Reptiland on Saturday

ALLENWOOD — Although construction continues on the facelift at Reptiland, the facility remains open daily, preparing for the new season of exhibits.

On Saturday, 12 life-size ancient reptiles will once again take up residence along Reptiland’s Prehistoric Path when “Dinosaurs Come to Life” returns. Returning dinosaurs for this animatronic exhibit include Tyrannosaurus rex, Stegosaurus and Brachiosaurus.

New additions to the lineup will include Citipati, a feathered, beaked dinosaur reminiscent of an emu, and Styracosaurus, or “spiked lizard,” a dino identified by its numerous horns, stout legs and bulky body. Baryonyx rejoins the crew, but with some alterations. Thanks to a coloring contest hosted by Reptiland, this dino received a one-of-a-kind makeover courtesy of Chanler Gribbin, of Williamsport. Chosen as the “Paint the Dino” contest winner, Chanler submitted an original design that served as the blueprint for the custom paint job Baryonyx received.

The butterfly exhibit also opens Saturday, with hundreds of these dainty creatures bringing the same charm and enchantment to Reptiland for the fifth year. Nearly 20 species of butterflies will be included in the exhibit.

In addition to replacing the roof, the main entrance building is getting a facelift. An elevated glass entry foyer will provide a new gathering area for groups, birthday parties and families, and additional gift shop space has been added. The project is expected to be completed by early summer.

Work also continues on the Island Giants building that will be home to Reptiland’s two Komodo dragons.

“We appreciate the patience of visitors and members as they anxiously await the opening of this exhibit. Once completed, we feel that we will have one of the most advanced Komodo dragon exhibits in the country. We hope everyone agrees it was worth the wait,” said Clyde Peeling, director.

People can check or Reptiland’s Facebook page for up-to-date information on the opening of Island Giants.

Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland, a specialized AZA accredited zoo, is on Route 15, north of Allenwood.
