Latin, mythology alive, well

Hard to imagine in this day and age, but in the Milton schools, the study of Latin and mythology is still part of the curriculum. In fact, nine seventh-graders at the Milton Middle School received gold medals for their top scores in the 19th annual National Mythology Exam.
Adam Weaver, Jeromey Ingram, Ryan Byers, Thomas Bennage, Alex Chapin, Morgan Reibsome, Michael Mitch, Grant Wargo and Paige Aikey were among 10,000 students nationwide who took the exam, testing their knowledge of Roman, Greek and African myths.
And at Milton Area Senior High School, six students snagged medals in the National Latin Exam. Devin Dreese, Steph Martello, Alison Evans, Morgan Greenly, Sarah Heimbach and J.C. Reich took the test. Greenly took a gold medal, Heimbach received her fourth gold medal and Reish received his third gold medal.

Janelle Dreese, of Watsontown, said the recent spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction at the Watsontown Elementary School to benefit the family of Steve Graves was a success. Unfortunately, Mr. Graves, a custodian at the school and a longtime coach, died of cancer a week before the event was held.

On Sunday, young anglers will have a chance to test their skills during the Children’s Fishing Derby and Outdoor Life Fair sponsored by the Milton Moose Family Center. Tony Snyder and Judy Showers are organizing the event, with all proceeds to benefit the Children’s Community Charity Funds.
Kids under 12 may take part in the derby, from 12:30 to 5 p.m., for $3. Registration opens at 11:30 a.m., and there are lots of prizes. Oh, and don’t worry about the fish. the Moose Club has stocked Limestone Run from the Brown Avenue Park all the way to the Susquehanna River. This is a catch-and-release derby, so there should be plenty of fish.
And while you’re at the fishing derby, you can enjoy a fun fair with rides, booths and food stands. Food will include a chicken barbecue starting at noon. Tickets are available at the Moose: $6 for the meal and $4 for half a chicken.
And if that’s not enough, the Milton Model Train Museum on the third floor of the Moose will be open for a “work in progress” visit from 1 to 5 Sunday afternoon. Check out the model of the Milton Moose built and donated by former police chief Mike Warns and models of Chef Boyardee and ACF built and donated by Gary Baylor, of Lewisburg. Baylor also donated 40 cars to the model railroad. George Venios, of the museum, said work is progressing on construction of the scenery on the 20-by-60 foot layout, which represents Milton in the 1950s.

And don’t forget the American Red Cross of Upper Northumberland County is sponsoring a blood drive on Thursday from 1 to 6 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 400 Main St., Watsontown, with donations in honor of Wayne Hawley, the Warrior Run Area Fire Department captain seriously injured while fighting a fire Nov. 28.
