Halifax takes on unbeaten Pine Grove

— HALIFAX — At 0-6, Matt Maniskas knows the most important thing these days is to keep preaching to his players that they have something to play for.

“I keep telling them that it’s about personal pride,” he said. “(Losing), it’s a tough issue and it’s a like big elephant in the room. We finally scored an offensive touchdown the other week and now it’s ‘when are you going to get the win?’ ”

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Wildcats (0-6, 5-0 Tri-Valley League) as TVL co-leader Pine Grove pays them a visit Friday.

“I’ve been watching film of them since Friday and their running back (Ryan Heim) is quick and can burst through a hole which presents a challenge to every team in our league,” Maniskas said. “Their quarterback runs the ball very well and they are a disciplined team. That’s something our kids are trying to learn how to be.”

The identity issue is still there for Maniskas’ team.

“We’re still waiting to piece together a 48-minute game,” he said. “This is a young group that we have and I know I keep saying we are getting closer and closer to where we can be and it doesn’t show up on the scoreboard or on the stat sheets, but, we just have to keep plugging away.”

Pine Grove (6-0, 5-0 TVL) is coming off a 14-6 win over Williams Valley to remain one of two unbeaten teams  (Tri-Valley) in the TVL.

The Cardinals are averaging 25 points per game while allowing 9.3 points per game. They’ve held opponents to under 10 points in four of their six games.
