Police probe rape claim at abandoned motel

MOUNT CARMEL — A woman found half-naked, semi-intoxicated and injured as she ran through borough streets Tuesday morning said she had been raped at a vacant motel the night before, police say.

The unidentified 34-year-old reportedly told police she was sexually assaulted in the vacant Visintainer’s Motel, on Fourth and Maple streets, by a man who followed her after she left a bar Monday night.

The woman claims the man took her into a room on the ground floor of the motel, which has been closed for more than three years.

Police did not have a suspect and said they were treating the report as a possible sexual assault.

“She said she was attacked by an unknown male,” Mount Carmel Police Chief Todd Owens said Wednesday. “We haven’t been able to speak with her and nail down a full story as to what happened at this point.”

Owens said the woman was found missing her pants and that her clothing was discovered on a stairway of the motel.

The alleged victim was transported by ambulance to Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, shortly after she reported the incident.

“She will be released from the hospital in a few days and we should have a better idea of events once we get to talk to her,” Owens said.

“We are not sure of anything right now. She did have some head trauma and scraps and abrasions on her arms and hands and shoulders.”

Owens began investigating the incident with his department on Tuesday after receiving a search warrant from Mount Carmel District Judge Hugh Jones.
