March on Market draws 25G

— LEWISBURG — An estimated 25,000 people aligned five and six deep on sidewalks along a 1½-mile route Saturday watched 250 organizations march in the Union County Veterans 4th of July parade.

“It was tremendous,” parade committee president Kevin Bittenbender said as he stood among a crowd of 2,500 gathering in President’s Grove at Bucknell University at the conclusion of the 2½-hour parade. “It was standing-room only for how hot it was. They stacked up entire sidewalks with people vying for a sight of the parade.

“We can’t thank the community enough,” he said, “for its generosity, especially financially.”

The parade was $14,000 in debt after the 2013 march, but donations from Valley businesses and organizations helped to sustain the 20th annual event.

“The community will do anything and everything to maintain this parade and continue the legacy,” Bittenbender said. “Graham Showalter was the parade committee president the past 20 years, and I hope to fill in his shoes in the next 20 for the generation that will come behind me, and continue it forward.”
