Troopers: The carjacking that wasn't

— MIDDLEBURG — State police at Selinsgrove called off a reported carjacking Wednesday after determining the alleged 40-year-old victim had mental health issues and had fabricated the story.

Troopers responded to the alleged incident at 12:30 p.m. near Route 104 and Shade Mountain Road. The female caller told Snyder County emergency services she had been taken hostage by a man in York, ordered to drive to Snyder County and abandon her vehicle on Shade Mountain.

Troopers and Middleburg police found the victim unharmed in the woods near her abandoned vehicle. Troopers began an immediate ground and air search looking for the man.

While investigating, authorities found inconsistencies with the victim’s story. Troopers report that the victim was later found to have fabricated the carjacking story because of mental health issues. She was then evaluated at a local hospital.
