Told to hurry, mom drives 600 miles, finds Miranda transferred

Mother: Warden didn't keep his word

SUNBURY — Miranda Barbour, held in Northumberland County Prison since her Dec. 3 arrest in connection to the Nov. 11 slaying of Troy LaFerrara, of Port Trevorton, was whisked away late Friday night to the State Correctional Institution at Muncy, according to her mother and grandmother.

Miranda’s mother, Elizabeth Dean, and Miranda’s grandmother, Darlene Fletcher, who live in different North Carolina towns, said they were told by Northumberland County Prison Warden Roy Johnson at 1:57 p.m. Friday to get to the prison as soon as possible so they could meet with Miranda for the first time since Miranda’s arrest.

Johnson knew Dean and Fletcher  were en route on Friday, Dean said.

They drove eight hours to Sunbury, arrived at the county lockup and were given a handwritten note by a corrections officer, who said the note was from Johnson. That note had only the telephone number of SCI-Muncy.

Dean called SCI-Muncy late Friday night and was told she could not see her daughter for 10 to 12 days.

“I’m pissed,” Dean said. “He called us when we were traveling on the highway to Sunbury and he said we needed to get here as soon as possible. He said he could not go into details. He said to get here as soon as you can.”

Dean and Fletcher arrived at 6:30 p.m.

“We handed them our IDs, and the guy who was at the front went back and got his supervisor, and the supervisor handed me this note.”

Her grandmother, Darlene, said: “I just drove 600 miles to see my granddaughter. I haven’t seen her since October.”

Added Dean of Johnson: “He didn’t keep his word."

Miranda's first attempt to call her mother was cut off Friday night. She later left a brief message at 9:22 p.m. in which she said she had been transferred.

"Let Dad know," she said. "Love you. Bye."
