$5G grant: Blame it on the rain

Sunbury neighborhood group selling barrels to collect drops

SUNBURY — The Sunbury Hill Neighborhood Council has received a $5,000 grant to purchase rain barrels for city residents who want to manage storm water and cut the cost of municipal service bills.

With a partial match to the Water Resources Education Network grant, the neighborhood council was able to buy 115 barrels to sell at a discount to any Sunbury resident, said Natalie Wertman, president of the council.

The barrels collect and store rainwater from downspouts and rooftops.

“You can use the water for gardens, to wash your car, anything you would normally use water for,” Wertman said. “Anything but drinking.”

Depending on the size of the roof, a single rainstorm could potentially fill a barrel, she said.

The grant also funds two workshops with presentations by Jaci Harner, of the Northumberland County Conservation District, and Lynn Wilson, of the Little Shamokin Creek Watershed Association.

The first workshop was held April 12, and the second is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. June 14 at the Kiwanis Playground, behind the Sunbury Community Hospital.

The Hill Neighborhood has two different kinds of barrels: 55-gallon regular barrels and 40-gallon deluxe barrels that are more aesthetically pleasing, Wertman said.

Of the 115 barrels purchased, only 40 regular and 25 deluxe are still available. Regular fully-assembled barrels cost $5 and deluxe barrels, $25.

To reserve a rain barrel or spot at the workshop, call 570-286-4085.

The workshops and barrels are funded by the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania Citizen Education Fund through a Growing Greener Grant from the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The Hill Neighborhood worked with the Northumberland County Conservation District, Shamokin Watershed Group, Sunbury Revitalization Inc., the city of Sunbury and the Sunbury Municipal Authority.
