Murder suspect can visit baby girl

SELINSGROVE — As far as a Snyder County commissioner knows, none of Miranda Barbour’s relatives are in the process of pursuing custody of the murder suspect’s 1½-year-old girl, who remains in protective services.

One day after Barbour, 18, was arrested on charges she fatally knifed a Port Trevorton man and left him for dead in a city alley, Snyder County Children and Youth Services took custody of Barbour’s child.

Although she faces criminal homicide and other charges, Barbour, of Selinsgrove, is eligible to visit with her child, Peggy Chamberlain Roup said Wednesday.

Barbour is locked up at Northumberland County Prison.

The girl remains in protective services, said Roup, a Snyder County commissioner who oversees the county’s Children and Youth department.

“The baby is doing very well,” Roup said. “This child needs as much normality as she could get right now.”

Representatives from Roup’s department took fast action Dec. 3 after Barbour was arrested, Roup said, in removing the girl from the Selinsgrove home.

“I’m glad to see she is in a safe and stable environment,” Roup said of the girl’s placement with a Snyder County family. “She (the child) has engaged in conversation and she is doing well.”

Barbour’s suspected accomplice in the Nov. 11 slaying, husband Elytte Barbour, told The Daily Item on Dec. 4 that the child’s biological father was deceased.

Sunbury police, who have not confirmed the death of the biological father, arrested Elytte Barbour two days later.

Miranda Barbour has relatives in Coats, N.C., and Roup said she is not aware that any family members have contacted Snyder County about claiming the child.

“No one has stepped up as far as I know,” she said. “If someone were to do that, there is a process that would have to be gone through. Right now, the child is still Miranda Barbour’s and she (the child) is her daughter.”

Miranda Barbour would be permitted to visit with her child, Roup said.

“She is the mother,” Roup said. “She has not been proven guilty and she would be able to visit with her child.”

The baby is in foster care.

Reports she has been receiving from the family housing the child are positive, Roup said.

“She is a charming little girl,” Roup said. “And a beautiful little girl.”

Roup said she was not aware of Miranda Barbour trying to spend time with her child.

“No one has said anything to me about her trying to visit with the little girl,” she said. “That is something that will go through Children and Youth if that happens.”

Roup declined to comment on whether the child has requested a visit.

“I couldn’t say if she did,” Roup said. “All of this is handled by Children and Youth and we have a great staff and they will do what they need to do to make sure the child is safe.”
