Want to bring in the new year with laughter? That’s what music/comedy duo John Branyan and Michael O’Brien are offering to their audiences during two shows on Monday at Country Cupboard in Lewisburg.
Branyan has performed at the venue in the past, but this will be O’Brien’s first time, and he said he’s “really looking forward to it.”
O’Brien is a 20-year music veteran, perhaps known best for his seven-year tenure as lead singer of the Christian band Newsong.
He said he and Branyan met through Christian comedian Anita Renfro, and have since worked together to present a unique music/comedy performance. O’Brien’s most memorable performance with Branyan was on a comedy cruise a few years ago.
The dynamic show has them taking turns at center stage, as well as sharing it.
“We kind of mix it up a bit,” O’Brien said. “He does a segment, I do a segment of Silly Songs with Michael O., and then we come together and do some spontaneous things.”
O’Brien said he’ll be playing the piano, and that the music he will present will cover a variety of styles.
Branyan — a 25-year comedy veteran — will present his high-energy and hilarious comedy, which he dubs “speaking that won’t leave a filthy residue” to the Country Cupboard stage. Branyan’s “Shakespeare” version of The Three Little Pigs has been viewed millions of times, and his book “A Triune Tale of Diminutive Swine” is in its third printing. Branyan is featured on a number of comedy projects with people like Ken Davis, David Jeremiah, Ted Cunningham and Tim Hawkins.
Melissa Swartz, event coordinator at Country Cupboard, said they are happy to be hosting the show.
“We were looking at doing something a little different than we usually do,” she said, adding, “This will be a great combination of comedy and music fit for the whole family to enjoy.”
Attendees can also choose to have a meal before the show.
O’Brien said he hopes the audience will experience the old adage – “Laughter is good medicine.”
He also hopes they see his heart: “I want people to know that I love the Lord and want to glorify him with the gifts that he has given me.”
