CARLISLE — As part of its strategic and long-term effort to reduce its environmental footprint, Giant Food Stores is joining with community partners to protect the planet in celebration of Earth Day.

“Earth Day happens in our stores every day. Our Green Captains and our store teams focus on diverting organic waste from landfills, but we are also helping the local communities we serve by increasing donations of safe consumable food,” said Manuel Haro, vice president of strategy, Giant Food Stores. “On Earth Day and every day, Giant wants to make sure we are staying true to our promise and helping to ensure a healthy planet for future generations.”

Recently recognized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for its food recovery achievements and sustainable business practices, Giant is mobilizing its associates while forming community partnerships to elevate its earth-friendly practices for Earth Day, including these events and programs:

Last month, Giant launched a brand-new program, Bags 4 My Cause, as another way for the company and its customers to help local nonprofits and the environment. Each time a customer purchases a Bags 4 My Cause reusable shopping bag with a giving tag, they’ll have the power to direct a $1 donation to a local nonprofit of their choice. Currently, more than 3,500 nonprofit organizations are participating and more than $31,000 has been donated by Giant and Martin’s customers. In celebration of Earth Day, Giant continued its tradition of donating park benches to community organizations as part of its “Bags to Benches” program. The company is donating 50 benches to local fire departments, churches, schools, townships, parks, playgrounds and libraries to help beautify the communities in which it operates. Giant customers are encouraged to return unused plastic bags to their local store to be recycled. It takes over 10,000 plastic bags to make one park bench. Since 1997, a grand total of 1,700 benches have been donated.

Leading the charge to minimize the company’s impact on the planet, Giant is committed to being an environmental steward and responsible retailer.

To shine a light on Giant’s sustainability efforts, today, the company launched a special Earth Day video on its YouTube Channel.
