SELINSGROVE -- Edith B. Young, 97, of The Manor at Penn Village, 51 State Route 204, passed away at 12:50 a.m., on Saturday, August 20, 2011, at the Manor.
She was born on Dec. 6, 1913 in Coal Run, a daughter of the late Charles and Bertha (Levan) Smith. On April 20, 1935, in Lincoln Street Methodist Church, Shamokin, she married Strickler H. Young, who preceded her in death on March 31, 1990.
Edith graduated in 1933 from Coal Township High School. She met her future husband while attending high school. Edith and Strick square danced many Saturday nights and also belonged to a bowling league together for several years. They had a cabin (Shade's Wigwam) in Millmont along Penns Creek. She loved going there and Strick enjoyed fishing.
She worked at her father-in-law's store and also took in washing and ironing for several families in Shamokin.
Edith attended St. John's United Methodist Church, Coal Township.
Edith loved her many friends at Penn Village, liked playing bingo, going to church services and watching the fish in the aquarium. She had previously resided at Coal Township Elderly High Rise, 101 N. Ash St., Coal Township, for 20 years. She had many friends at the high rise, went on club trips and played bingo a couple times a week. She was a great Philadelphia Phillies fan and enjoyed watching Penn State football games. She also enjoyed word puzzle books.
She is survived by her loving family including one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Shirley Young, of Millmont; one daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and William Hoch, of Middletown; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at James Kelley Funeral Home, 1001 W. Arch St., Coal Township, immediately followed by the funeral service. The Rev. Karyn Fisher, pastor of St. John's United Methodist Church, Coal Township, will preside.
Burial be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Coal Township.
